Dodd & Co Walk Away with CYZ Charity Football Trophy

Over 100 people gathered at Carlisle Youth Zone to raise much needed funds for the charity, whilst showing off the city’s football skills. The tournament was organised by Carlisle Legend Billy Rafferty to raise funds for CYZ’s junior club.

The teams, which included Armstrong Watson, H&H Insurance, David Allens, Sow Rats FC, MSport, Sparrow Hawks, played in group stages in a morning of sunshine but the afternoon changed dramatically and saw torrential rain. This did not dampen the determination and spirit of the teams, who continued to play through the storms. Dodd & Co came up against Wigton team AC Lowmoor in the final, and after a long day of football Dodd & Co came out on top to clinch the shield. Armstrong Watson won the second league after winning against Dissington, and the team playing on behalf of Carlisle Youth Zone came out on top in the third league.

The money raised will go towards sports equipment for junior club (children aged 8-13), this will include a specialist basketball hoop which can be used by all heights and abilities, a selection of soft play equipment which can be used inside (when the weather stops play!) and the money will also be used to support junior clubs budding artists with art supplies.

Billy Rafferty was thrilled with the turn out and also the passion of the teams ‘All the teams played exceptionally well and they were all determined to make the most of it – despite the weather.  They have all been part in raising funds for a great charity, and hopefully have played part in encouraging more youngsters to get into sport through CYZ.’

The competition was kindly supported by Pioneer Foods and Nichol Signs & Trophies
