I love all things music. My main instrument is the bass, but I can also play guitar and drums. It’s amazing that I can do all of this at the youth club and have full access to the equipment. I joined because a lot of my friends were already going – they came to every session, so I thought it would be a good way to get to know more people and have something different to do after school.
This project – like music in general – is an escape from the real world. It’s a space where I can make organised noise and take a break when life feels overwhelming. I’ve been dealing with some bullying at school, so having something positive to focus on really helps. It’s also felt like I’ve been losing friendships lately…
…“so being part of this project has been a good thing during a tough time, and it’s helping me work towards my GCSE music grade.”
I’ve got a lot of extracurricular things going on, but I really enjoy being part of the music group and learning how to work in a band.
We’re currently working on two songs together as a band. It’s a completely new experience for me, and we’re learning everything as a group. It’s a challenge, but I’m really excited for when we have a final piece ready to perform.
I joined the band after one of the staff members approached me and explained that there would be opportunities to perform live and take part in more music sessions. That really appealed to me. I’ve always been involved in the music sessions and karaoke at the youth club, but until now there hadn’t been a chance to form a band and learn directly from a staff member.
There are loads of things I enjoy at the youth club – football, young leading, playing pool, working towards my Duke of Edinburgh award, and using the music room. The project has given me much more time in the music room, which means I can practise my GCSE pieces properly. I’ve enjoyed working with staff to improve our skills and supporting other young people with their instruments.
Young leading has helped me feel more confident and responsible – I’ve learned how the music equipment works and I like showing others how to use and look after it. Being part of a band has boosted my confidence so much. It’s totally different to playing on your own – it takes patience and teamwork to make sure we’re all on the same page. I didn’t know everyone in the band at first, but now I feel more comfortable talking to new people.
Staff reflection:
This young person has made a big impact on others, especially through their young leading role. During junior sessions, they’ve helped deliver music activities and supported others in learning new instruments. Their passion for music and performance is clear, and they’d make an excellent music teacher if they chose to go down that path. They’ve said this project has built their confidence both personally and as a performer – and I completely agree. It’s been incredible to watch them grow each day into a leader and musician.
